What is AMSTI
The Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative, commonly referred to as AMSTI, is the Alabama Department of Education’s initiative to improve STEM teaching statewide, including improvements in the individual STEM Subjects and in integrated STEM. Its mission is to support Alabama educators and students in learning STEM through doing STEM.
AMSTI’s motto is: Learning by Doing
AMSTI has three basic services: professional learning, resources, and onsite support. All educators in the state of Alabama with instructional responsibilities for STEM subjects are eligible to participate in AMSTI. Teachers who attend training receive the resources needed to implement the lessons in the classroom. Additionally, participating teachers are eligible for follow-up support during the school year delivered through coaching and professional learning communities.
University of South Alabama Site
As a site we are committed to improving the learning of all students, by facilitating teachers as they master the central concepts, important facts and skills, and tools of inquiry needed to teach math and science. We aim to help teachers anchor content in learning experiences that make the subject matter meaningful for all students. Our coaching and partnership work with teachers takes into account the current research on how students grow, develop, and learn. The USA site seeks to facilitate teachers as they provide learning experiences that are responsive to the differences of students, both culturally and instructionally. As ardent supporters of formative assessment, our staff members strive to base all collaborative work with both teachers and students on relevant data and evidence collected real time during the course of our work. Our mission is to equip students, teachers, and administrators to create a culture of learning within their classrooms, schools, and communities.
